Metal Roofing Systems 101

Deciding on a Roof Material.

When building a new home from the ground up or replacing your roof, choosing your roofing material is a big decision. From shingles to metal roofs and everything in between, Elite Roofing and Restoration is here to give you all the information you need to select the best roof for your home.

Metal Roofing Systems have grown in popularity over the past few years because they are unique and perfect for certain homes or businesses. These roof types have a much larger variety in color and style than you would think, as well as provide an extensive lifespan with regular maintenance.

Lower in maintenance than shingles. When properly installed, metal roofs require very little maintenance. However, we do not recommend skipping your annual roof inspection- this is important to keep your gutters clean, clear off any debris, and catch dents/scratches/corrosion early so they don’t lead to costly repairs.

Energy efficient and weather resistant. During the summer heat, metal roofs reflect the sun away from your home, rather than absorb it like asphalt shingles do, saving you money to cool your home. Metal roofs can withstand the elements better than shingles, which can wrinkle in the sun or peel up during harsh storms.

Made from recycled materials and recyclable if replaced. Unlike asphalt shingles, which supply billions of pounds of waste to landfills annually, metal roofs are completely recyclable. In fact, they are often made with recycled material, making them an eco-friendly roofing option.

Variety of profile options and colors, also paintable. Metal roofs open up a myriad of options when it comes to roof color. You can choose a natural material (aluminum, copper, steel, zinc) that provides your desired color, or paint your metal roof.

Lifespan of 60 years with regular maintenance. When properly installed and maintained, metal roofs can last up to 60 years. Compared to shingle roofs, which need to be replaced around every 20 years, it is easy to see why metal roofs are a popular choice.

Before making your decision on what material is best for your new roof, it is important to be aware that every roofing material has its downsides. Metal Roofing Systems are no exception.

Higher costs upfront. It is true that upon installation, metal roof systems cost more than shingles. However, homeowners that choose metal roofings often find that they save more money on repairs and regulating your indoor temperature. Metal roofs can also increase the resale value of your home if you ever decide to sell.

If installed improperly, these are not as energy efficient. If your metal roof is not correctly installed, it can increase the strain on your home’s HVAC. If you have a metal roof that you suspect was not installed properly, contact our team at Elite Roofing and Restoration to evaluate your roof today.

Can be quite noisy during heavy rains and storms. Metal roofs cannot absorb the sound of rain as well as other roofing materials. During heavy downpours, you will be able to hear the echo of droplets hitting your roof. While there are ways to insulate your roof and dampen the sound, metal roofs will always be noisier than their competition.
