Fall Roof Maintenance

Winter is coming, is your roof ready?

Fall has arrived bringing shorter days, Pumpkin Spice Lattes, a change in the foliage, and sweater weather. This transitional season marks the end of summer fun and beginning of the holiday season. It is time to start making a list and checking it twice- and no we don’t mean a list for Santa, a list to prepare your roof for winter weather!

It is important to identify any roof damage and potential issues before inclement weather arrives. Your roof is what stands between your family and freezing temperatures. Take some time to prepare your home during the fall so you don’t encounter any unexpected problems during the winter.

1. Check your home for signs of roof damage. Sagging rooflines, missing shingles, water damage, or a moldy attic are key signs your roof is not in good health. Check your home for obvious signs of roof damage and schedule repairs as needed. It is critical to address these issues as soon as possible, if left unrepaired they can develop into more costly problems.

2. Clean your roof. After ensuring your roof is structurally safe, it is time to clean off debris. It is extremely common for twigs, small branches, and leaves to accumulate on your roof. If left all winter, it will become saturated with water and could cause water damage to your roof. This debris can be removed easily on a dry day with a leaf blower or gloved hands.

3. Clean your gutters. Clogged gutters can be very problematic during the winter. Leaves and twigs lodged in your gutters will prevent proper water drainage and, when temperatures drop, the trapped moisture and debris will freeze together. With no way to drain, water will pool or overflow onto your roof and increase your likelihood of water damage. The additional weight of ice, sticks and leaves may cause your gutter to sag or detach from your home. Depending on the extent of the damage, you may end up replacing your gutters.

4. Trim trees hanging over your roof. Tree branches located too close to your home can become hazardous in the winter. Snow and ice will cling to overhanging limbs, weighing them down and causing them to break. To avoid roof damage caused by falling branches, trim them back before freezing weather arrives. While some small branches can be easily trimmed, we recommend contacting a professional tree removal service to remove dangerous branches rather than attempting to do so yourself.

5. Schedule a roof inspection and any necessary repairs. Schedule a professional roof inspection to address any concerns you have with your roof. Appearances can be deceiving, so even if your roof appears healthy, a roof inspection will make sure that there are no underlying issues.
