Understanding the Layers of Your Roof

Have you ever heard of the phrase, “out of sight, out of mind”? Essentially, we focus on what we can see. For example, if I asked you to draw a picture of your roof, you’d probably draw a picture of shingles (or whatever roofing material you have on your home). While this would not be incorrect, your roof is actually composed of several layers that play an important part in your roofing system. Let’s take a closer look at each of these layers and see what role each component plays in keeping your home safe.

Framing

Think of framing as the bones of your roof. It is the first layer that provides the base and shape of the rest of your roof. Trusses are the main part of the frame- they support and distribute the weight of your roof. Trusses are made up of beams, bars and ties to create a triangular form.

Insulation

Insulation is found in your attic walls and/or floors and helps regulate the temperature of your home. In a well insulated home, hot air will remain inside in the colder months and outside in the hotter months.

Ventilation

A properly ventilated attic uses a combination of intake and exhaust vents that are placed at integral points on your roof to improve airflow. Without proper ventilation, your roof is at risk of water damage, mold, high energy bills and a shortened roof lifespan.

Roof Deck

The roof deck, also known as sheathing, is made up of plywood and is installed directly on top of the framing. The roof deck provides a solid surface for the rest of the roof to attach to.

Water Barrier

The water barrier is exactly what it sounds like: a layer that protects the wooden frame and roof deck from melting ice and wind driven rain.

Underlayment

The underlayment provides a flat surface for the following roof layers as well as additional protection from water that may infiltrate your shingles. There are two types of roofing underlayment: felt and synthetic.

Starter Strip

Starter strips are specialized shingles installed between the roof decking and before the underlayment which allows them to adhere to the edge of your roof. They create a seal that defends against losing shingles due to high winds.

Shingles

Now comes the layer we are most familiar with. Your shingles are the outer layer of your roof, facing the elements day in and day out. Asphalt shingles, either architectural or 3-tab, are the most common roofing material. They are covered in granules which contribute to shingle color and protect against fire. If you don’t have shingles, this layer will be another popular roofing material such as metal, shake, tile or slate.

Ridge Cap

Ridge caps are specially made singles that are installed on the ridge of a sloped roof and cover the joint of the two edges. These shingles serve two main functions: keeping rain and snow out of the home and allowing hot air to leave the attic.

Flashing

Flashing can be made out of a variety of metals like aluminum, copper, zinc alloy, or galvanized steel. It is a waterproof layer installed anywhere on the roof where there is a seam (chimneys, walls, vents, and skylights). This material may not cover the entirety of your roof, but it plays an important role in directing water away from spots on your roof that become vulnerable to water damage over time.

When it comes to your roof, there is much more than meets the eye. If one layer is left out or improperly installed, your entire roof is at risk.
