The Top 5 Questions You Should Ask a Roofer Before Signing Your Contract

When choosing a professional to reroof your home, there are a few questions you’ll want to keep in mind to make sure you are selecting the right company for the job.

There is a lot to learn when re-roofing your home – from which products to use, to what procedures best meet your needs. Your selected roofing contractor needs to give you top-notch service with a peace of mind that you are protected and making the best choice.

Here are a few questions you’ll want to ask your roofing contractor before signing a contract to help assure that you are happy with the process and end product.

  1. What is the full name and address of the company? Although your Aunt Sally may refer you to her neighborhood roofer, hiring a company close to home will likely work better for you in the long run. Having someone who is close will allow them to provide better service with a quicker response time. Asking this question can also help you rule out companies who tend to work from the back of a truck and may not have the longevity needed to assist you with your roofing needs for years to come.

  2. Is the company a credentialed contractor (or do they carry a license)? This question simply asks if the contractor is licensed by your state (and maybe even your city). Note that not all states require contractors to be licensed. You can check with your local licensing authority for all of the details on what is required of contractors prior to speaking with various roofing companies.During the “interview process” it is also beneficial to confirm that your contractor provides comprehensive liability insurance and workers’ compensation insurance in order to keep you protected in the event of an accident.

  3. How long has the company been in business? Due to the fact that the failure rate of small businesses in the first several years is very high, you want to confirm the age of the company. Sure, everyone has to start at the beginning, but knowing that your contractor is in for the long haul will give you the comfort in knowing that they will be available in the event problems arise down the road.

  4. Can the company provide references from previous jobs? If you select a newer contractor, references are the best way for you to know that they will provide the services you need. Ask for photos of their completed work, request a list of 5-10 names and phone numbers of recent customers throughout the last 12 months.

  5. What kind of workmanship warranty does the company provide? Each roofing contractor offers a different workmanship warranty. Some are longer than others, but the value lies in the intent of the roofer to stand behind his work/warranty. Ask the references you receive questions such as: how responsive is the roofer? Does the company act like they care about the customers needs and wants? Did the company complete the work in a timely manner? Do you feel like the company is trustworthy?

By asking these questions and doing your own thorough research, you will have a peace-of-mind that your hard earned money is going to the perfect job for your needs.
